The Command to Leave Sinai
  33:1 The Lord said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ 2 I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”

4 When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’” 6 Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward. The Tent of Meeting
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. 9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. Moses’ Intercession
12 Moses said to the Lord, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” 14 And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?”

17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”

Moses Makes New Tablets
  34:1 The Lord said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. 3 No one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite that mountain.” 4 So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first. And he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone. 5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. 9 And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.” The Covenant Renewed
10 And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.

11 “Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I will drive out before you the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 12 Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in your midst. 13 You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their Asherim 14 (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God), 15 lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they whore after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and you are invited, you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters whore after their gods and make your sons whore after their gods.

17 “You shall not make for yourself any gods of cast metal.

18 “You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib, for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt. 19 All that open the womb are mine, all your male livestock, the firstborn of cow and sheep. 20 The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And none shall appear before me empty-handed.

21 “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. 22 You shall observe the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end. 23 Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel. 24 For I will cast out nations before you and enlarge your borders; no one shall covet your land, when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.

25 “You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with anything leavened, or let the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover remain until the morning. 26 The best of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”

27 And the Lord said to Moses, “Write these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. The Shining Face of Moses
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

34 Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

PROVERBS 11

« Proverbs 10 | Proverbs 11 | Proverbs 12 »

11:1
A false balance is an abomination to the Lord,
but a just weight is his delight.
2
When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with the humble is wisdom.
3
The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
4
Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
but righteousness delivers from death.
5
The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight,
but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.
6
The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
7
When the wicked dies, his hope will perish,
and the expectation of wealth perishes too.
8
The righteous is delivered from trouble,
and the wicked walks into it instead.
9
With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor,
but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.
10
When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices,
and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness.
11
By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown.
12
Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense,
but a man of understanding remains silent.
13
Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets,
but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.
14
Where there is no guidance, a people falls,
but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
15
Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm,
but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure.
16
A gracious woman gets honor,
and violent men get riches.
17
A man who is kind benefits himself,
but a cruel man hurts himself.
18
The wicked earns deceptive wages,
but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.
19
Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live,
but he who pursues evil will die.
20
Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the Lord,
but those of blameless ways are his delight.
21
Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished,
but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.
22
Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman without discretion.
23
The desire of the righteous ends only in good,
the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
24
One gives freely, yet grows all the richer;
another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
25
Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one who waters will himself be watered.
26
The people curse him who holds back grain,
but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.
27
Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor,
but evil comes to him who searches for it.
28
Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,
but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
29
Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind,
and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
30
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
and whoever captures souls is wise.
31
If the righteous is repaid on earth,
how much more the wicked and the sinner!

PSALM 17

« Psalm 16 | Psalm 17 | Psalm 18 »

In the Shadow of Your Wings
A Prayer of David.
17:1
Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry!
Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit!
2
From your presence let my vindication come!
Let your eyes behold the right!

3
You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night,
you have tested me, and you will find nothing;
I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.
4
With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips
I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5
My steps have held fast to your paths;
my feet have not slipped.

6
I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me; hear my words.
7
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O Savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.

8
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9
from the wicked who do me violence,
my deadly enemies who surround me.

10
They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11
They have now surrounded our steps;
they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.
12
He is like a lion eager to tear,
as a young lion lurking in ambush.

13
Arise, O Lord! Confront him, subdue him!
Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword,
14
from men by your hand, O Lord,
from men of the world whose portion is in this life.
You fill their womb with treasure;
they are satisfied with children,
and they leave their abundance to their infants.

15
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

PSALM 18

« Psalm 17 | Psalm 18 | Psalm 19 »

The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:
18:1
I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.

4
The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of destruction assailed me;
5
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.

6
In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.

7
Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and quaked, because he was angry.
8
Smoke went up from his nostrils,
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9
He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.
10
He rode on a cherub and flew;
he came swiftly on the wings of the wind.
11
He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him,
thick clouds dark with water.
12
Out of the brightness before him
hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.

13
The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice,
hailstones and coals of fire.
14
And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
15
Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

16
He sent from on high, he took me;
he drew me out of many waters.
17
He rescued me from my strong enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me.
18
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the Lord was my support.
19
He brought me out into a broad place;
he rescued me, because he delighted in me.

20
The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
21
For I have kept the ways of the Lord,
and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22
For all his rules were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.
23
I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from my guilt.
24
So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25
With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
26
with the purified you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
27
For you save a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28
For it is you who light my lamp;
the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
29
For by you I can run against a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
30
This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

31
For who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God?—
32
the God who equipped me with strength
and made my way blameless.
33
He made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure on the heights.
34
He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35
You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand supported me,
and your gentleness made me great.
36
You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
37
I pursued my enemies and overtook them,
and did not turn back till they were consumed.
38
I thrust them through, so that they were not able to rise;
they fell under my feet.
39
For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
you made those who rise against me sink under me.
40
You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and those who hated me I destroyed.
41
They cried for help, but there was none to save;
they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42
I beat them fine as dust before the wind;
I cast them out like the mire of the streets.

43
You delivered me from strife with the people;
you made me the head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me.
44
As soon as they heard of me they obeyed me;
foreigners came cringing to me.
45
Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling out of their fortresses.

46
The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation—
47
the God who gave me vengeance
and subdued peoples under me,
48
who rescued me from my enemies;
yes, you exalted me above those who rose against me;
you delivered me from the man of violence.

49
For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
and sing to your name.
50
Great salvation he brings to his king,
and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
to David and his offspring forever.
