1 CHRONICLES 13

The Ark Brought from Kiriath-Jearim
  13:1 David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. 2 And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God, let us send abroad to our brothers who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us. 3 Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” 4 All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. Uzzah and the Ark
5 So David assembled all Israel from the Nile of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. 6 And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord who sits enthroned above the cherubim. 7 And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were driving the cart. 8 And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.

9 And when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. 10 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God. 11 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” 13 So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the Lord blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.

1 CHRONICLES 14

« 1 Chronicles 13 | 1 Chronicles 14 | 1 Chronicles 15 »

David’s Wives and Children
  14:1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. 2 And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

3 And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet. Philistines Defeated
8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. 10 And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” 11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. 12 And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.

13 And the Philistines yet again made a raid in the valley. 14 And when David again inquired of God, God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations.

PROVERBS 24

« Proverbs 23 | Proverbs 24 | Proverbs 25 »

24:1
Be not envious of evil men,
nor desire to be with them,
2
for their hearts devise violence,
and their lips talk of trouble.

3
By wisdom a house is built,
and by understanding it is established;
4
by knowledge the rooms are filled
with all precious and pleasant riches.
5
A wise man is full of strength,
and a man of knowledge enhances his might,
6
for by wise guidance you can wage your war,
and in abundance of counselors there is victory.
7
Wisdom is too high for a fool;
in the gate he does not open his mouth.

8
Whoever plans to do evil
will be called a schemer.
9
The devising of folly is sin,
and the scoffer is an abomination to mankind.

10
If you faint in the day of adversity,
your strength is small.
11
Rescue those who are being taken away to death;
hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
12
If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,”
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it,
and will he not repay man according to his work?

13
My son, eat honey, for it is good,
and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
14
Know that wisdom is such to your soul;
if you find it, there will be a future,
and your hope will not be cut off.

15
Lie not in wait as a wicked man against the dwelling of the righteous;
do no violence to his home;
16
for the righteous falls seven times and rises again,
but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.

17
Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles,
18
lest the Lord see it and be displeased,
and turn away his anger from him.

19
Fret not yourself because of evildoers,
and be not envious of the wicked,
20
for the evil man has no future;
the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

21
My son, fear the Lord and the king,
and do not join with those who do otherwise,
22
for disaster will arise suddenly from them,
and who knows the ruin that will come from them both?
More Sayings of the Wise
23 These also are sayings of the wise.
Partiality in judging is not good.
24
Whoever says to the wicked, “You are in the right,”
will be cursed by peoples, abhorred by nations,
25
but those who rebuke the wicked will have delight,
and a good blessing will come upon them.
26
Whoever gives an honest answer
kisses the lips.

27
Prepare your work outside;
get everything ready for yourself in the field,
and after that build your house.

28
Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause,
and do not deceive with your lips.
29
Do not say, “I will do to him as he has done to me;
I will pay the man back for what he has done.”

30
I passed by the field of a sluggard,
by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,
31
and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns;
the ground was covered with nettles,
and its stone wall was broken down.
32
Then I saw and considered it;
I looked and received instruction.
33
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
34
and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.

The Mystery of the Gospel Revealed
  3:1 For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God’s grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. 13 So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you, which is your glory. Prayer for Spiritual Strength
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
