The Birth of Samuel  1:1 There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 2 He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
    3 Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord. 4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. 6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”
    9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”
    12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. 14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” 17 Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” 18 And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.
    19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her. 20 And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.” Samuel Given to the Lord21 The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.” 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”
    And he worshiped the Lord there.

The Lord Reigns97:1

The Lord reigns, let the earth rejoice;

let the many coastlands be glad! 2

Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;

righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3

Fire goes before him

and burns up his adversaries all around. 4

His lightnings light up the world;

the earth sees and trembles. 5

The mountains melt like wax before the Lord,

before the Lord of all the earth.
6

The heavens proclaim his righteousness,

and all the peoples see his glory. 7

All worshipers of images are put to shame,

who make their boast in worthless idols;

worship him, all you gods!
8

Zion hears and is glad,

and the daughters of Judah rejoice,

because of your judgments, O Lord. 9

For you, O Lord, are most high over all the earth;

you are exalted far above all gods.
10

O you who love the Lord, hate evil!

He preserves the lives of his saints;

he delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11

Light is sown for the righteous,

and joy for the upright in heart. 12

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,

and give thanks to his holy name!

27:1

Do not boast about tomorrow,

for you do not know what a day may bring. 2

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;

a stranger, and not your own lips. 3

A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty,

but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both. 4

Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming,

but who can stand before jealousy? 5

Better is open rebuke

than hidden love. 6

Faithful are the wounds of a friend;

profuse are the kisses of an enemy. 7

One who is full loathes honey,

but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet. 8

Like a bird that strays from its nest

is a man who strays from his home. 9

Oil and perfume make the heart glad,

and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel. 10

Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend,

and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity.

Better is a neighbor who is near

than a brother who is far away. 11

Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad,

that I may answer him who reproaches me. 12

The prudent sees danger and hides himself,

but the simple go on and suffer for it. 13

Take a man’s garment when he has put up security for a stranger,

and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress. 14

Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice,

rising early in the morning,

will be counted as cursing. 15

A continual dripping on a rainy day

and a quarrelsome wife are alike; 16

to restrain her is to restrain the wind

or to grasp oil in one’s right hand. 17

Iron sharpens iron,

and one man sharpens another. 18

Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit,

and he who guards his master will be honored. 19

As in water face reflects face,

so the heart of man reflects the man. 20

Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied,

and never satisfied are the eyes of man. 21

The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,

and a man is tested by his praise. 22

Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle

along with crushed grain,

yet his folly will not depart from him.
23

Know well the condition of your flocks,

and give attention to your herds, 24

for riches do not last forever;

and does a crown endure to all generations? 25

When the grass is gone and the new growth appears

and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered, 26

the lambs will provide your clothing,

and the goats the price of a field. 27

There will be enough goats’ milk for your food,

for the food of your household

and maintenance for your girls.
