10:1 Israel is a luxuriant vinethat yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built;as his country improved,he improved his pillars.
2 Their heart is false;now they must bear their guilt. The Lord will break down their altarsand destroy their pillars.
3 For now they will say:“We have no king, for we do not fear the Lord;and a king—what could he do for us?”
4 They utter mere words;with empty oaths they make covenants;so judgment springs up like poisonous weedsin the furrows of the field.
5 The inhabitants of Samaria tremblefor the calf of Beth-aven.Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—those who rejoiced over it and over its glory—for it has departed from them.
6 The thing itself shall be carried to Assyriaas tribute to the great king.Ephraim shall be put to shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.
7 Samaria’s king shall perishlike a twig on the face of the waters.
8 The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed.Thorn and thistle shall grow upon their altars, and they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”and to the hills, “Fall on us.”
9 From the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;there they have continued.Shall not the war against the unjust overtake them in Gibeah?
10 When I please, I will discipline them, and nations shall be gathered against themwhen they are bound up for their double iniquity.
11 Ephraim was a trained calfthat loved to thresh, and I spared her fair neck;but I will put Ephraim to the yoke;Judah must plow;Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 Sow for yourselves righteousness;reap steadfast love;break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.
13 You have plowed iniquity;you have reaped injustice;you have eaten the fruit of lies.Because you have trusted in your own wayand in the multitude of your warriors,
14 therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people, and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel, because of your great evil.At dawn the king of Israelshall be utterly cut off.

The Lord’s Love for Israel11:1 When Israel was a child, I loved him,and out of Egypt I called my son.
2 The more they were called, the more they went away;they kept sacrificing to the Baalsand burning offerings to idols.
3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk;I took them up by their arms, but they did not know that I healed them.
4 I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love, and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws, and I bent down to them and fed them.
5 They shall not return to the land of Egypt, but Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me.
6 The sword shall rage against their cities, consume the bars of their gates, and devour them because of their own counsels.
7 My people are bent on turning away from me,and though they call out to the Most High,he shall not raise them up at all.
8 How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me;my compassion grows warm and tender.
9 I will not execute my burning anger;I will not again destroy Ephraim;for I am God and not a man,the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.
10 They shall go after the Lord;he will roar like a lion;when he roars,his children shall come trembling from the west;
11 they shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria, and I will return them to their homes, declares the Lord.
12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah still walks with Godand is faithful to the Holy One.

A Father’s Wise Instruction4:1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction,and be attentive, that you may gain insight,
2 for I give you good precepts;do not forsake my teaching.
3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother,
4 he taught me and said to me,“Let your heart hold fast my words;keep my commandments, and live.
5 Get wisdom; get insight;do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;love her, and she will guard you.
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.
8 Prize her highly, and she will exalt you;she will honor you if you embrace her.
9 She will place on your head a graceful garland;she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”
10 Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many.
11 I have taught you the way of wisdom;I have led you in the paths of uprightness.
12 When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble.
13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;guard her, for she is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickednessand drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness;they do not know over what they stumble.
20 My son, be attentive to my words;incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet;then all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;turn your foot away from evil.

The Scroll and the Lamb 5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals.
2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?”
3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it,
4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.
5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne.
8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they sang a new song, saying,“Worthy are you to take the scrolland to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for Godfrom every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,and they shall reign on the earth.”
11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands,
12 saying with a loud voice,“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,to receive power and wealth and wisdom and mightand honor and glory and blessing!”
13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lambbe blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
