Wives Provided for the Tribe of Benjamin 21:1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, “No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.” 2 And the people came to Bethel and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. 3 And they said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?” 4 And the next day the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5 And the people of Israel said, “Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?” For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.” 6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?”PROVERBS 26

26:1 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest,so honor is not fitting for a fool. 2 Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying,a curse that is causeless does not alight. 3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools. 4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. 6 Whoever sends a message by the hand of a foolcuts off his own feet and drinks violence. 7 Like a lame man’s legs, which hang useless,is a proverb in the mouth of fools. 8 Like one who binds the stone in the slingis one who gives honor to a fool. 9 Like a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkardis a proverb in the mouth of fools. 10 Like an archer who wounds everyoneis one who hires a passing fool or drunkard. 11 Like a dog that returns to his vomitis a fool who repeats his folly. 12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! There is a lion in the streets!” 14 As a door turns on its hinges,so does a sluggard on his bed. 15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish;it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth. 16 The sluggard is wiser in his own eyesthan seven men who can answer sensibly. 17 Whoever meddles in a quarrel not his ownis like one who takes a passing dog by the ears. 18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death 19 is the man who deceives his neighborand says, “I am only joking!” 20 For lack of wood the fire goes out,and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. 21 As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire,so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. 22 The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels;they go down into the inner parts of the body. 23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vesselare fervent lips with an evil heart. 24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lipsand harbors deceit in his heart; 25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not,for there are seven abominations in his heart; 26 though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. 27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling. 28 A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.ROMANS 13

Submission to the Authorities 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. 7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Fulfilling the Law Through Love8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.The ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version® copyright © 2001 by Crossway Bibles, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.
