Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind8:1 Set the trumpet to your lips! One like a vulture is over the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenantand rebelled against my law.
2 To me they cry,“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
3 Israel has spurned the good;the enemy shall pursue him.
4 They made kings, but not through me.They set up princes, but I knew it not. With their silver and gold they made idolsfor their own destruction.
5 I have spurned your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?
6 For it is from Israel;a craftsman made it;it is not God.The calf of Samariashall be broken to pieces.
7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads;it shall yield no flour;if it were to yield, strangers would devour it.
8 Israel is swallowed up;already they are among the nationsas a useless vessel.
9 For they have gone up to Assyria,a wild donkey wandering alone;Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Though they hire allies among the nations,I will soon gather them up.And the king and princes shall soon writhebecause of the tribute.
11 Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning, they have become to him altars for sinning.
12 Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands, they would be regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for my sacrificial offerings, they sacrifice meat and eat it,but the Lord does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquityand punish their sins;they shall return to Egypt.
14 For Israel has forgotten his Makerand built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities;so I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour her strongholds.

The Lord Will Punish Israel9:1 Rejoice not, O Israel!Exult not like the peoples;for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.You have loved a prostitute’s wageson all threshing floors.
2 Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail them.
3 They shall not remain in the land of the Lord, but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.
4 They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord, and their sacrifices shall not please him.It shall be like mourners’ bread to them;all who eat of it shall be defiled;for their bread shall be for their hunger only;it shall not come to the house of the Lord.
5 What will you do on the day of the appointed festival, and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
6 For behold, they are going away from destruction;but Egypt shall gather them;Memphis shall bury them.Nettles shall possess their precious things of silver;thorns shall be in their tents.
7 The days of punishment have come;the days of recompense have come;Israel shall know it.The prophet is a fool;the man of the spirit is mad, because of your great iniquityand great hatred.
8 The prophet is the watchman of Ephraim with my God;yet a fowler’s snare is on all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.
9 They have deeply corrupted themselvesas in the days of Gibeah:he will remember their iniquity;he will punish their sins.
10 Like grapes in the wilderness,I found Israel.Like the first fruit on the fig treein its first season,I saw your fathers. But they came to Baal-peorand consecrated themselves to the thing of shame, and became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird—no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 Even if they bring up children,I will bereave them till none is left.Woe to themwhen I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow;but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.
14 Give them, O Lord—what will you give?Give them a miscarrying womband dry breasts.
15 Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal;there I began to hate them.Because of the wickedness of their deedsI will drive them out of my house.I will love them no more;all their princes are rebels.
16 Ephraim is stricken;their root is dried up;they shall bear no fruit.Even though they give birth,I will put their beloved children to death.
17 My God will reject thembecause they have not listened to him;they shall be wanderers among the nations.

A Father’s Wise Instruction4:1 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction,and be attentive, that you may gain insight,
2 for I give you good precepts;do not forsake my teaching.
3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother,
4 he taught me and said to me,“Let your heart hold fast my words;keep my commandments, and live.
5 Get wisdom; get insight;do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;love her, and she will guard you.
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.
8 Prize her highly, and she will exalt you;she will honor you if you embrace her.
9 She will place on your head a graceful garland;she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”
10 Hear, my son, and accept my words, that the years of your life may be many.
11 I have taught you the way of wisdom;I have led you in the paths of uprightness.
12 When you walk, your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble.
13 Keep hold of instruction; do not let go;guard her, for she is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;turn away from it and pass on.
16 For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong;they are robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
17 For they eat the bread of wickednessand drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
19 The way of the wicked is like deep darkness;they do not know over what they stumble.
20 My son, be attentive to my words;incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;keep them within your heart.
22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet;then all your ways will be sure.
27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left;turn your foot away from evil.

The Throne in Heaven 4:1 After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”
2 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.
3 And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.
4 Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and seated on the thrones were twenty-four elders, clothed in white garments, with golden crowns on their heads.
5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God,
6 and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal.
And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind:
7 the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight.
8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say,“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
9 And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever,
10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God,to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
