Job Continues: Death Comes Soon to All14:1

“Man who is born of a woman

is few of days and full of trouble. 2

He comes out like a flower and withers;

he flees like a shadow and continues not. 3

And do you open your eyes on such a one

and bring me into judgment with you? 4

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?

There is not one. 5

Since his days are determined,

and the number of his months is with you,

and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass, 6

look away from him and leave him alone,

that he may enjoy, like a hired hand, his day.
7

“For there is hope for a tree,

if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,

and that its shoots will not cease. 8

Though its root grow old in the earth,

and its stump die in the soil, 9

yet at the scent of water it will bud

and put out branches like a young plant. 10

But a man dies and is laid low;

man breathes his last, and where is he? 11

As waters fail from a lake

and a river wastes away and dries up, 12

so a man lies down and rises not again;

till the heavens are no more he will not awake

or be roused out of his sleep. 13

Oh that you would hide me in Sheol,

that you would conceal me until your wrath be past,

that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! 14

If a man dies, shall he live again?

All the days of my service I would wait,

till my renewal should come. 15

You would call, and I would answer you;

you would long for the work of your hands. 16

For then you would number my steps;

you would not keep watch over my sin; 17

my transgression would be sealed up in a bag,

and you would cover over my iniquity.
18

“But the mountain falls and crumbles away,

and the rock is removed from its place; 19

the waters wear away the stones;

the torrents wash away the soil of the earth;

so you destroy the hope of man. 20

You prevail forever against him, and he passes;

you change his countenance, and send him away. 21

His sons come to honor, and he does not know it;

they are brought low, and he perceives it not. 22

He feels only the pain of his own body,

and he mourns only for himself.”

Taste and See That the Lord Is Good Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.
34:1

I will bless the Lord at all times;

his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2

My soul makes its boast in the Lord;

let the humble hear and be glad. 3

Oh, magnify the Lord with me,

and let us exalt his name together!
4

I sought the Lord, and he answered me

and delivered me from all my fears. 5

Those who look to him are radiant,

and their faces shall never be ashamed. 6

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him

and saved him out of all his troubles. 7

The angel of the Lord encamps

around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! 9

Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,

for those who fear him have no lack! 10

The young lions suffer want and hunger;

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
11

Come, O children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12

What man is there who desires life

and loves many days, that he may see good? 13

Keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from speaking deceit. 14

Turn away from evil and do good;

seek peace and pursue it.
15

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous

and his ears toward their cry. 16

The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,

to cut off the memory of them from the earth. 17

When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears

and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted

and saves the crushed in spirit.
19

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

but the Lord delivers him out of them all. 20

He keeps all his bones;

not one of them is broken. 21

Affliction will slay the wicked,

and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. 22

The Lord redeems the life of his servants;

none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

It is the glory of God to conceal things,

but the glory of kings is to search things out. 3

As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,

so the heart of kings is unsearchable. 4

Take away the dross from the silver,

and the smith has material for a vessel; 5

take away the wicked from the presence of the king,

and his throne will be established in righteousness. 6

Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence

or stand in the place of the great,
7

for it is better to be told, “Come up here,”

than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.

What your eyes have seen 8

do not hastily bring into court,

for what will you do in the end,

when your neighbor puts you to shame? 9

Argue your case with your neighbor himself,

and do not reveal another’s secret, 10

lest he who hears you bring shame upon you,

and your ill repute have no end.

A word fitly spoken

is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. 12

Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold

is a wise reprover to a listening ear. 13

Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest

is a faithful messenger to those who send him;

he refreshes the soul of his masters. 14

Like clouds and wind without rain

is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.
15

With patience a ruler may be persuaded,

and a soft tongue will break a bone. 16

If you have found honey, eat only enough for you,

lest you have your fill of it and vomit it. 17

Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house,

lest he have his fill of you and hate you. 18

A man who bears false witness against his neighbor

is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow. 19

Trusting in a treacherous man in time of trouble

is like a bad tooth or a foot that slips. 20

Whoever sings songs to a heavy heart

is like one who takes off a garment on a cold day,

and like vinegar on soda. 21

If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat,

and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, 22

for you will heap burning coals on his head,

and the Lord will reward you. 23

The north wind brings forth rain,

and a backbiting tongue, angry looks. 24

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop

than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife. 25

Like cold water to a thirsty soul,

so is good news from a far country. 26

Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain

is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. 27

It is not good to eat much honey,

nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory. 28

A man without self-control

is like a city broken into and left without walls.
