39:1

“Do you know when the mountain goats give birth?

Do you observe the calving of the does? 2

Can you number the months that they fulfill,

and do you know the time when they give birth, 3

when they crouch, bring forth their offspring,

and are delivered of their young? 4

Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open;

they go out and do not return to them.
5

“Who has let the wild donkey go free?

Who has loosed the bonds of the swift donkey, 6

to whom I have given the arid plain for his home

and the salt land for his dwelling place? 7

He scorns the tumult of the city;

he hears not the shouts of the driver. 8

He ranges the mountains as his pasture,

and he searches after every green thing.
9

“Is the wild ox willing to serve you?

Will he spend the night at your manger? 10

Can you bind him in the furrow with ropes,

or will he harrow the valleys after you? 11

Will you depend on him because his strength is great,

and will you leave to him your labor? 12

Do you have faith in him that he will return your grain

and gather it to your threshing floor?
13

“The wings of the ostrich wave proudly,

but are they the pinions and plumage of love? 14

For she leaves her eggs to the earth

and lets them be warmed on the ground, 15

forgetting that a foot may crush them

and that the wild beast may trample them. 16

She deals cruelly with her young, as if they were not hers;

though her labor be in vain, yet she has no fear, 17

because God has made her forget wisdom

and given her no share in understanding. 18

When she rouses herself to flee,

she laughs at the horse and his rider.
19

“Do you give the horse his might?

Do you clothe his neck with a mane? 20

Do you make him leap like the locust?

His majestic snorting is terrifying. 21

He paws in the valley and exults in his strength;

he goes out to meet the weapons. 22

He laughs at fear and is not dismayed;

he does not turn back from the sword. 23

Upon him rattle the quiver,

the flashing spear, and the javelin. 24

With fierceness and rage he swallows the ground;

he cannot stand still at the sound of the trumpet. 25

When the trumpet sounds, he says ‘Aha!’

He smells the battle from afar,

the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

“Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars

and spreads his wings toward the south? 27

Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up

and makes his nest on high? 28

On the rock he dwells and makes his home,

on the rocky crag and stronghold. 29

From there he spies out the prey;

his eyes behold it from far away. 30

His young ones suck up blood,

and where the slain are, there is he.”

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

  6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
    5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
    12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
